APPOINTMENT OF NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR

APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FOR THE POSITION OF MUSIC DIRECTOR

ABOUT THE POSITION

Aldeburgh Music Club choir is seeking an inspirational Music Director to replace our current MD, Edmond Fivet CBE, who is retiring in May 2020 after 13 highly successful years with the choir.

Based in East Suffolk and founded in 1952 by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, Aldeburgh Music Club is a mixed voice, non-auditioned choir of c.90 members who meet to rehearse in Aldeburgh on Tuesday evenings during academic terms.  It gives three concerts a year, customarily at Snape Maltings Concert Hall (November and March), and Orford Church (May), to a high standard and using professional soloists and orchestral players when required by the programme.

The choir’s repertoire ranges from baroque to modern classical, and short anthems to major works – programmes of recent concerts can be found on our website.  Our current President is Humphrey Burton CBE, with Robin Leggate and Dame Ann Murray as Vice-Presidents.

The new musical director will have an extensive knowledge of the choral repertoire, with proven experience and aptitude for inspiring a mixed-ability choir in a positive and enjoyable manner to enable presentation of concerts (which may include a mix of choral and orchestral works) to the highest possible standard.  He/she will be expected, in consultation with the Chair and orchestral manager, to recommend professional soloists, and advise the committee on all musical requirements for concerts – all with an eye to concert budgets.

The new MD will be well supported by the choir’s committee, the members of which take full responsibility for administrative matters, including booking of and liaison with venues, publicity and finance.  The choir employs a professional accompanist who may take sectional rehearsals and occasionally accompany in concert.

For information, dates of and venues booked for concerts in the choir’s 2020/21 season are as follows:

  • Saturday 21 November 2020 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)
  • Saturday 20 March 2021 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)
  • Saturday 15 May 2021 (St Bartholomew’s Church, Orford)

Aldeburgh Music Club is a registered charity (number 1000990).  Further information about the choir can be found on our website www.aldeburghmusic.club.
